Starring Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, Ray Romano, Woody Harrelson. Directed by Greg Berlanti. Sony Pictures (2024)
🪩🪩.5 / 5
Highly stylised to take audiences on a journey back to the days of the 60’s, Fly Me To The Moon meshes historical facts, archival footage, conspiracy theories and fiction to tell a rom com story about the moon landing.
But it’s this mish mash that makes for a bland story that fails to ignite the same romantic flair that 60s movie icons Doris Day and Rock Hudson were renowned for...
Scarlett Johansson shines as marketing superstar Kelly Jones giving a smart performance that should captivate audiences… but her ability is lost amongst the stiffness of Channing Tatum’s Cole Davis and a plot that loses gravity as the film progresses.
Supporting character’s with promise are under- developed as the film chooses style over a well rounded and versed story.
It’s cheesy 60s humour will land for some but the volume of Kubrick jokes wears thin fast.
For those who may have experienced the decade, it will be a nice trip down memory lane but if you are looking for a witty film that nails the battle for space in a clever, Mad Men-esque way then this was not the giant rom com leap mankind was looking for.
Fly Me To The Moon is in cinemas now.
